However, the rest of the verse says this happened “because of the terrible famine.” Other translations render the Hebrew as skin becoming “hot as an oven” from hunger. According to Matthew, his family later fled with him to Egypt before eventually returning. So the historical picture isn’t a blond, blue-eyed European Jesus.
