that's the most one of the correct explanations. Boeing was competing against lockeed C5 for military cargo contract. they lost so they rebranded it to passenger transport

The 747 originally was designed as a freighter for the Air Force but the Air Force end up picking Lockheed c5a, then Boeing converted the 747 to a passenger airplane

Cocktail lounge? I think airlines stopped using the upper deck for a lounge maybe in 1973 when there was an oil crisis. It’s an area with regular seats in one of the three classes now.

I had the privilege of having flown many times on the Pan Am 747s and had drinks in that cocktail 🍸 lounge, up the spiral staircase and just behind the cockpit! A bygone era now!
