Taylor Swift for example, she came out of her parents fortune

To me Olivia dean is an amazing example of someone who presumably had the means to train in the arts for most of her life, but genuinely has the life perspective / experiences and actual talent and skill to execute music that reads as authentic and thus connects to so many people of all demographics

if you do enough digging every artist that “comes out of nowhere” either has come from money or has serious connections but no one realises it.

100% think acts should be more forthcoming about nepotism ties, but on the other hand it feels like we have full blinders on to nepotism of the past? Whitney Houston’s mom was a Grammy recipient, Adam Levine’s dad founded a clothing chain, Taylor Swift’s family OWNED shares in her first label… The reality is a lot of our faves stem from nepotism & they all had safeguards if music didn’t work out. The only reason its sour today is the (wider spread) awareness of wealth inequality 🤷♂️

Taylor Swift’s Stock broker family moved to Nashville to make her dreams come true. Tate McRae is the daughter of a Calgary oil executive who funded her first album & music videos.

I don't get why record labels don't discover artists like they did back then anymore.. like why wouldn't they want to find another Tina Turner or David Bowie

How does this even happen tho? Like is it just the artist turns 18 and their parents just give them money to hire a producer? Or do they just set them up with people they know?

I think a big part of the solution is empowering music fans. It seems like a lot of fans don’t realize the music industry also operates off of supply and demand and they are the ones driving the demand. A great example of this is when a song blows up on TikTok and it starts getting played on radio - there’s so much demand for the song that radio has to get on board or they look out of touch. Same with festivals, etc.

I appreciate this Nicky - the solution is using your platform to spotlight indie artists with great songs, and people financially above using their money to fund artist incubators with great and kind teachers, instead of just increasing their fame

Omg one of the first things I learned in my college music business class is that is costs minimum $250,000 to make an album. And that is at a local studio w local employees. And that is entirely independent of the marketing label side of things that costs another $750,000 because you have to build a trusting team and pay them salary. It probably cost stella left around $2 million to make, market, and perform this album. Thats why you don’t see other debut artists at lollapalooza and making high quality marketed records like this. Because they don’t have $2 million to do it.

There is a difference between wealth privilege and nepotism. Most of what you’re describing is wealth privilege, which is still a problem, don’t get me wrong. But we need to stop demonising the kids that are products of this, by no fault of their own, and start trying to push for increased funding into the arts for underprivileged youth. That’s how you address a problem, not by constantly berating people who are currently benefiting from the problem, but are not, themselves, the problem.

I think an artist like Audrey Hobert, who is very relatable and seems authentic, has appeal because she credibly talks about her insecurities, shyness, crushing on people but feeling not attractive enough for them. This is very relatable, but she doesn’t and can’t at all address other topics such as financial struggles. I mean since the beginning of pop music most artists obviously focus on heartbreak and maybe (general) depression.

If you are going to go there…look at the people who work at the record labels…and start researching their families…we can also go into the aspect about pay, benefits, unions, data, research, ai, and who they are currently hiring, etc…
