@kinacptsdtherapist: I’m leading a webinar on emotional neglect this January that’s open to everybody! You can get tickets on my website, KinaWolfensteinTraining.com, under Events. I also have some other resources available there, including an attachment workbook designed for both therapists doing this kind of work with clients and people doing their own personal healing work.
I tried a therapist. The first day she taught me a box method to shut away all your feelings after EMDR. I was confused because that's what I've done my whole life. 😆😆😆

This is the reason I am very calm in extremely stressful situations. 😅

This really clicked for me. I have pushed down my emotions for so long that any kind of release in front of others, even ones I love and trust, feels like I’m out of control and I’m going to either scare them or they’re going to punish me. I never thought about it as being over regulated but that makes so much sense. I think the first step has been allowing myself to express in private and gradually working up to others

I’m 41 and didn’t realize that overregulation isn’t the goal. I’ve always wondered why so many people seem emotional. I was empathetic for them but also couldn’t understand their lack of self control. Well it’s me. I’m the problem.

"what are you feeling?" I HAVE NO FUCKING IDEA. I wasn't ALLOWED to have emotions. no one explained what ANYTHING felt like. it took me 5 years to realize I was anxious. and I still have to tell myself I'm not crying for attention if I hide when I cry.
my poor husband... we were about to do a frustrating task and he started by saying "before we begin, just know that I love you and this is just a thing." I then proceeded to get frustrated because I physically could not do what he was asking, and that was NOT acceptable growing up. 😐

I had like 10 years of absolutely sobbing once I started feeling my emotions. I thought I would always be like that, but it seems after I got everything out I was fine. Very very strange thing to go through

I had a really bad crying break down during one of my sessions close to the date of my brother's death. And that's what my therapist did. She started trying to make me do regulating exercises. And that's how I felt. Like once again I wasn't allowed to have an emotion. For the DEATH of a loved one. (That was my last straw with her btw. Stopped seeing her after that.) So hearing this was very cathartic.

I can want to open up to someone, be in the middle of doing so, but my body is sending signals like im in danger. Heart beating faster, shaking, not letting myself cry

It got to the point where I started crying the minute I walked in my counselor’s office. I tried to apologize for it and she stopped me and said, “you being able to cry in front of me tells me your body recognizes this as a safe space to finally release those emotions you’ve been keeping locked down and regulated. You can ALWAYS cry with me with no judgment.”

My new therapist once did the "Let's pause, I see you're very activated" and I later shut that down. I'm not here to have my feelings shut down and be taught to ignore and bottle them even more than I do. We're not reinforcing that abd masking emotions

I almost always know what I feel, why I feel it, if I should be feeling that or not, etc. But at the same time I don't get what is that "feel your feelings" thing. I analise them from a rational perspective to try and fix them but I somehow can't seem to do that even though I know how I should feel, if that makes sense.

Intellectualizing emotions and trauma vs processing and feeling it. Somatic therapy may help as well. Also exactly like you said, having someone to say “I am not afraid to see you like this” while you allow yourself to express emotions helps tremendously.

ONCE my therapist suggested looking at something from my mother’s perspective. it triggered me so much because that was my strategy as a child to suppress my emotions. i lost my “control” and ended up shouting at my therapist. it was so healing for me to finally “lose it” and refuse to minimise my emotions and refuse to put someone else’s emotions first. in our next session i was able to calmly communicate that one thing i do not need to do ever is think of the other person’s perspective. i need to stop doing that and actually focus on how things affect ME

Talk therapy turned me super avoidant as an already emotionally neglected child, teen, and adult. Always was called dramatic and sensitive and abandoned for showing it

Yeah I’ve actually never experienced a time where I ever ACTED on my emotions, or did what my emotions told me to do. And having a space where you are safely able to do that is such an important thing for development and learning coping skills

sooo how do you actually start having emotions 😳 I've been dissociated all my life. therapy doesn't work because I don't know anything!! first therapist said it was a manipulation tactic so i didn't have to answer. I WOULD LOVE TO ANSWER THE QUESTIONS!!! IF I KNEW THE ANSWERS!!
