Big sister advice: unless it’s going to have an adverse effect on your life e.g physical safety, emotional abuse and any level of danger, please learn to be comfortable around Somali elders no matter what you wear, girls. We don’t learn this in our community because of the perpetual infantilisation of women but if youre over 18, you’re ADULTS. This means learning to communicate agency to others through your actions. Pretending to be Ethiopian, looking physically uncomfortable and straight up avoiding other Somalis means you’re signalling lack of power, lack of agency and ironically, this is how you attract more people trying to police you because you’re not giving grown woman standing on business. Somalis respond to authority so you need to signal authority. This doesn’t mean be super close to conservative Somalis btw, it just means treat them normal and don’t run away
