something i haven’t felt in weeks is the part that keeps stopping me and i want to try to name it because i think it deserves a name even though it resisted one for a long time. it was not happiness. happiness was too far from where i was standing and would have required a journey i did not have the energy for. it was not relief exactly, though relief was in it somewhere. it was not hope in the aspirational sense, the things will get better sense, the this too shall pass sense. it was something older and quieter than any of those things. the closest i have come to naming it is recognition. the specific feeling of being recognized by something that has no reason to know you and knows you anyway. the dots did not know me. they were not looking at me or thinking about me or aware in any way that i was sitting in the dark crying looking at them. and still something in being seen by the map, in being included in the lit-up company of all those women without having to apply or explain or perform okayness to gain entry, felt like recognition. you are one of these. you belong in this. you were always in this even when you could not see it. and i had not felt that in weeks. the belonging that does not require anything from you. the recognition that arrives before you have done anything to earn it. i had been so far outside that feeling for so long that when it came back i did not know what to call it. i just sat there for ten minutes letting it be whatever it was. #postpartum #newmom #postpartumsupport #momtok #momlife
