I have a 13 year old who is a tail wearer. She 100% is the animal kid. Do I allow that shit at school? Absolutely not. She wants to wear huge baggy clothes and and weird clothes. Nope. I make her dress in trendy clothes. I make her do her hair everyday . I’ve make her do year round soccer, ever since she was 5. But I also let her be weird outside of school. I buy her animal masks and tails and anime shit. You can still support your kids interests without setting them up for isolation and depression. I also don’t allow any social media or internet on phone. The kids at school love her, her soccer team is obsessed with her. If I let her wear tails and shit they would never give her the time of day. They would never get to realize how hilarious and cool she is. Parents stop letting your kids dress depressed and dress weird around peers. You don’t need to change what they like, but you are setting them up for life long isolation. You are letting them be comfortable in isolation. These are their social skill building years. I also recommend therapy so they have an outside 3rd party to vent to that is not you.

As controversial as it sounds I think as a society we need to bring back a healthy amount of shame. Embarrassment is an essential emotion that helps us fit in as it teaches us what behaviours are shunned by our peers. Yes, it’s great to be yourself, but if you’re going to be weird, you better be tough.

as a weird kid, the biggest lesson I learned is that being the weird kid isn’t ur interests it’s ur behavior! as I became more social I realized a lot of the “popular” ppl had similar interests as me, they just knew how to talk to ppl and present themselves
