Whether people earned less back then is pretty irrelevant when it’s the fact that the cost of living has increased way beyond salary increases. That is the issue.

@MrMark: Statistics should not be used in isolation or when quoting averages. For example if there are 10 people in a room and 9 are earning £20,000 and the other 1 is earning £200,000 then the average earning for the room is £38,000! Statistics only tell part of the story

I bought a 2 bed room flat in penge london for 51,000 in 1991 on a 20,000 wage which was about average in london then . Average london house prices are now over 600,000. Average london wages are now 60,000. Those facts give you some idea .

look at the statistics of average earnings now are you earning that ? wage statistics are an average when including millionaires etc not a true fact of what the average person earns 🙄🙄

I think people are ignorant not stupid. They don’t understand because they are ill educated not stupid. Education in UK is poor, people don’t understand statistics. People often make judgements based on their circumstances thinking most people are in their situation. People don’t really know what others get paid or who is really wealthy. A flash car and people assume some is doing well when they are heavily in debt and the guy with the old car is broken when he’s sitting on an investment fortune.

The wages were good back then. There were like actual skilled jobs in chemical and engineering manufacturing, we made things back then. Hospitality was a part time job in a pub restaurant 👍

Mate you're getting your "figures" from Google 😂 just listen to people who were actually living back then.. I was earning £145 a week in the army going into the 90s.. less than 10k a year.. but Google it and it'll tell you that we were earning 15k+
