It’s never losing them, other than potentially paying cap gains on them now (vs later on), one still have ability to buy them even if exercised (other than potentially losing long term cg tax rate). Not sure if stock is way ITM if buying it back becomes expensive compared to rolling (which still has risk of being stuck with the contract over long term since rollover will likely be long term for deep ITM

In your scenario, I buy back the call and wait. If the option is keep the call open or roll it down, the lower risk, higher probability trade is just keep the original sold call open. Better to have a really good chance of $30 vs losing the shares chasing the $90.
