WE DON’T HAVE TO BE “Nature is cruel, but we don’t have to be.” — Temple Grandin Nature has no ethics. The wolf does not hate the deer. The storm does not resent the village. Winter does not punish the homeless person sleeping beneath the bridge. Nature simply acts. It creates and consumes, nourishes and destroys. One creature survives because another does not. Rivers flood. Fires burn. Bodies age. Disease spreads. The innocent suffer alongside the guilty because nature recognizes neither innocence nor guilt. But we do. Human beings possess something nature does not: the ability to recognize suffering, imagine ourselves inside it and choose whether to relieve it. That is where responsibility begins. Cruelty is not merely the existence of pain. It is pain inflicted, prolonged or ignored when another choice was available. A predator kills because it must eat. A government lets people starve after calculating the cost. A storm destroys a home. A landlord profits from one that is unfit to inhabit. Winter freezes without intention. A society leaves people outside despite knowing they may die. These are not the same. We invoke nature to excuse human behaviour: survival of the fittest, every person for themselves, life is unfair. But civilization exists precisely because nature is unfair. We build shelters because storms are indifferent. We practise medicine because disease has no mercy. We protect children, animals, elders and strangers because vulnerability should not be a death sentence. Compassion is not weakness before nature. It is our answer to it. If God gave us free will, it was not permission to behave like creatures incapable of moral choice. It was the responsibility to choose what nature cannot: restraint over domination, protection over exploitation and mercy over indifference. Free will does not absolve us. It identifies us. Nature cannot choose whether to be cruel. We can. God gave us free will. What are you doing with yours? Just Tracy, Just ’Cause. Parsimony. Clarity. Virtue.
