No, I felt that the mom knew EXACTLY what she was doing. She was manipulating the manipulator. Saying, ‘no Luke has the bags.’ He takes them. She mentions ‘go out to eat for birthday’ and he brings flowers! Talking about work TO GET DETIALS. I feel like the mom knows exactly what she is going. She is playing chess while Laura is trying to play checkers, mom is giving her a lesson on how to ‘leave smart’ 😏

Laura’s mom is no idiot, I think. She may not agree with divorce as a rule, and she may have initially encouraged Laura to suck it up because of that, but she notices things, and that’s why Luke doesn’t want her there. She’ll look like she’s gassing him up, but in reality, it’s weaponized, passive-aggressive praise. He knows he can’t outright get mad about her either, because it outs him.

I get the feeling she’s going to help but tell Laura at every step that she better be sure she isn’t making a mistake or that she disapproves. I think the head games she raised Laura with are part of why she was vulnerable to Luke’s abuse in the first place 😩

The way Shawna writes such complex characters is amazing! Though Laura Mother has "old" views on marriage, is nice to see that she's not opposed her preparing fiances to get a divorce, and instead giving her useful tips.
