@deltabolic: Smith Machine Shoulder Shrug Mistakes (FIX THESE!) Mistake #1: Bending your arms as you shrug up Bending your elbows can shift some of the load away from your traps and increase involvement from your delts and biceps. Fix: Keep your arms relatively straight throughout the movement and focus on driving your shoulders upward. Mistake #2: Staying completely upright Okay, this one is a bit of a hot take. Staying completely upright isn't necessarily wrong, but it may not be optimal for everyone. For some people, upright shrugs can feel uncomfortable around the shoulder joints. An upright position also tends to emphasize the upper traps, limiting how much of the rest of the trapezius you can effectively train. Fix: Try a slight forward lean. This may feel more comfortable for your shoulders and changes the line of pull, potentially allowing you to train more of the middle traps, in addition to the upper traps.
