He was standing there. Back turned. I shouted, “I found it!” He didn’t answer. I stepped closer. His head slowly turned. Too far. His neck kept turning. Until his face was looking directly at me. It wasn’t my supervisor. It had his face. But the smile was wrong. Too wide. Then the flashlight went out. I woke up in the hospital. My supervisor was sitting beside my bed. He told me they found me unconscious near the tunnel entrance. I asked him how long I’d been down there. “Twenty minutes.” I told him what happened. He looked confused. Then he said something that still bothers me. “There hasn’t been a tunnel under the hospital for thirty years.” I didn’t believe him. Until he showed me the old blueprints. The basement ended at the metal door. There was nothing behind it. No service tunnel. No valve. No chamber. I thought that was enough to make me stay away from underground places forever. It wasn’t. Three months later, I got a package. No return address. Inside was my flashlight. The batteries were dead. And a small piece of paper. Four words were written on it. You left me down there.
