@nourishingapothecary: We hear a lot about endocrine disruptors and fertility, but what are they actually doing? Some environmental chemicals can interact with our endocrine system by mimicking, blocking or altering normal hormone signalling. One way this can happen is through interaction with oestrogen receptors. Certain compounds can have oestrogenic or anti-oestrogenic activity, potentially changing the signals our cells receive. But it’s more complicated than simply saying these chemicals “increase your oestrogen”. Different endocrine-disrupting chemicals may influence hormone receptors, hormone production and metabolism, transport proteins and other parts of endocrine signalling. When we’re looking at fertility and preconception health, environmental exposure is something I consider as one part of a much bigger clinical picture. This is a snippet from my first full YouTube video, where I break down what I want couples to understand when preparing to conceive.
