Counterpoint: no one should read Flashpoint or Doomsday Clock. Despite their import to DC’s history, they are terrible. And Tower of Babel was just reinforcing the point Morrison made in New World Order when Batman takes out multiple White Martians.

Return of Superman, Flashpoint, Crisis on Infinite Earths, I can agree with. If you like Doomsday Clock, we’ll agree to disagree but I don’t think it’s a top 5 most impactful DC comic all time at all. It was an optional explanation of DC’s second big reboot that most people didn’t care for. If we’re talking most impactful DC comics, Doomsday Clock could and should easily be replaced with one of its major influences: Watchmen. Other viable options: The Sandman, Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Kingdom Come, All-Star Superman, Jack Kirby’s Fourth World to name a few. And while I don’t love the story, The Dark Knight Returns should take the spot of JLA as it was largely responsible for the tone shift of Batman away from what he was to who he’s been for the past 35+ years. It along with Watchmen was also responsible for leading to the creation of the Vertigo line for darker stories to be told.

Respectfully, we were already aware that Batman, with preparation, could go toe to toe with other members of the Justice League. At the end of Mark Waid's "Tower of Babel," Batman is voted out of the Justice League because his profound paranoia is detrimental to the team and his behavior is deemed conduct unbecoming of a League member.

GURBOTRON :

Id have All In Special/Absolute Batman 1 over both Doomsday Clock and Flashpoint. The Absolute Universe has been game changing for the entire industry and is succeeding where the New 52 didn’t. And while the meta commentary on Superman was cool in Doomsday Clock, it was building off seeds planted in books like Multiversity. And FWIW, the same role is established for Darkseid in the All In Special.

Batman :

You can pair Doomsday Clock and Flashpoint together tbh

I’d include the Legion story The Great Darkness. It was the one that really brought Darkseid into main DC Continuity

Great list, but I’d have to put Kingdom Come and Dark Knight Returns in top 5. I’d probably bump Doomsday Clock (it was messy) and Babel (it wasn’t redefining). I love both of those stories and they might be in my top 10, but I think KC and TDKR were revolutionary for the DCU.

Good list. Rebirth is how I got into comics. I’d only make one small change and swap another crisis for Tower of Babel. Infinite since it led to no Trinity for a bit.
