Warm-up: Footwork & Passing Circuit Created via SportSessionPlanner.com Organisation • Large rectangular area adapted to available space • Starting cone positioned outside one short side • Footwork ladder positioned on the return route • Dribbling poles/cones and finishing gate positioned on one side • Mannequin or central reference point • Minimum 4 players • Balls positioned at the starting cone To maximise participation: → Duplicate the setup where possible → Keep starting groups small → Adjust distances to suit age, ability and physical capabilities Practice: • Player 1 passes into Player 2. • Player 2 sets the ball back to Player 1. • Player 1 plays centrally into Player 3 and follows the pass. • Player 3 connects with Player 2. • Player 2 receives and dribbles through the poles/cones. • Player 2 exits through the gate and carries the ball around the outside. • Player 2 plays a longer pass back towards the starting position. • Before rejoining, Player 2 completes the footwork ladder. • Players rotate through each position and the sequence repeats. Progressions ⤷ Progression 1: Find Another Solution Once players understand the original sequence, challenge each group to create another way of combining through the three-player passing section before progressing into the dribble. They might discover: • Give-and-go movements • Different supporting angles • Longer passes • Don't provide the solution immediately. Ask: “Can you find another way of getting the ball from here to there while everyone remains involved?” Progression 2: Choose Your Exit ⤷ Add a second dribbling gate on the opposite side, after the passing combination, the receiving player can now attack either exit. The other players must recognise the decision and rotate accordingly. Rather than knowing “I go left next,” players now have to read what is happening. Progression 3: Two-Way Traffic ⤷ Mirror the dribbling poles and gates on the opposite side and run two sequences simultaneously. Players now share the same space and must: • Scan before moving • Recognise available space • Adjust the timing of passes and runs • Communicate with other players • Change their route when another player occupies the intended space • Allow players to find their own solutions when traffic develops rather than stopping the activity and prescribing exactly where everyone should go. Gamified Scoring ⤷ Rather than simply racing through the circuit, teams can score for quality: • Successful complete circuit = 1 point • Complete circuit without the ball stopping = bonus point • Player-created combination completed successfully = bonus point Teaching the “Why” Read the Picture → “What does your body position need to look like before the ball arrives?” → “Where are the other players before you move?” Purpose in the Action → “Does your pass help the next player complete their action?” Change the Rhythm → “Where does the ball need control?” → “Where can you accelerate?” #grassrootsfootball #backtoit #Soccer #footballtiktok
