On the 1st of September, light a candle in a warm autumn colour such as orange, gold, brown or deep red. Place it somewhere quiet beside a small symbol of the changing season. This could be an apple, a fallen leaf, acorns, cinnamon, rosemary or anything that makes you feel the first shift towards autumn. Take a piece of paper and divide it into two sections. On one side, write down what you do not want to carry any further into the year. Old pressure, habits, expectations, worries or anything that feels as though its season has ended. On the other side, write three things you want September to bring more of. Peace, courage, money, creativity, protection, rest, confidence, love or whatever you need most. Hold the paper between your hands and read the chant slowly three times. When you finish, tear away the section containing everything you are releasing. Dispose of it safely, or burn it in a fireproof dish if you normally work with fire in your practice. Keep the other half beneath your candle, on your altar, inside your journal or somewhere you will see it throughout September. Before extinguishing the candle, say: “September, I meet you with intention. May what is ending leave gently. May what is beginning find me ready.” Then allow the month to unfold. September has always felt like a threshold to me. Not quite the end of the year, not quite the beginning of the dark season, just that strange beautiful doorway where the air begins to change and something inside us seems to change with it too.
