In the book Gandalf, when whipped stumbles for a couple seconds and then falls screaming “fly you fools” as he was falling. Nobody would have had a chance to help him.

Gandalf and the Durin's Bane (this balrog) are the same type of creature. And so is Sauron for that matter. They're all of the Maiar. The Istari were not allowed to use their full power as ordered by the Valar, just nudge the men, elves, and dwarves to fulfill the plan of Iluvatar. Sauron and the balrogs didn't follow that rule as they served Melkor, not the Valar.
