Rule 1: if long-term systemic glucocorticoids are being discontinued, do not stop abruptly. Taper only according to the prescriber's plan. Long-term therapy can suppress the body's cortisol response, and severe deficiency during illness or surgery can lead to adrenal crisis with hypotension or shock. Rule 2: immune responses can drop while glucose rises. Steroids can also mask infection signs, so assess a new temperature rise, symptoms, trends, dose, and the care plan rather than relying on one dramatic sign. Monitor glucose more closely as prescribed. For immediate-release oral prednisone, take it with food for stomach upset; if it is prescribed once daily, morning dosing is generally used unless ordered otherwise. Rule 3: chronic exposure can cause Cushingoid changes such as facial rounding, easy bruising, proximal muscle weakness, and bone loss. Cushing syndrome is chronic excess glucocorticoid effect. Cushing triad is a late sign of dangerously raised intracranial pressure. The suffix matters, but it is not proof. Dapsone is a sulfone antimicrobial, not a glucocorticoid.
