Despite having the ball thrown his way with nobody around him, Williams dropped the would-be touchdown. After a quarterback hurry on second down and a short run up the middle, New Mexico State was forced to settle for a 38-yard field goal from Ilya Uvaydov, cutting Florida State’s lead to 17-10 with 7:36 remaining in the second quarter. It came during a season opener carrying plenty of pressure for Mike Norvell and Florida State. The Seminoles entered 2026 after going just 7-17 over the previous two seasons, including 3-13 in ACC play with zero road wins. Norvell responded by overhauling the roster with 62 new players and multiple new coaches, with quarterback Ashton Daniels and linebacker Chris Jones among the new faces making their FSU debuts.
