I agree to an extent, but doesnt the person from Iowa have less resources and a much less developed research environment? If they did it soley on merit, everyone would be from Cali. Similar argument for college admissions

That happened to my son in the LA science fair. He couldn’t make it to the State level.. even though his project was good. It was very competitive. 1000 students participated inly in Los Angeles. Also there is a lot of nepotism. Some students advance because their parents are judges or they know judges.
