You seem to be wandering around with a Sharpie, renaming shared bodies of water and suggesting that Canada might become your fifty-first state. You good, bud? Before you change Lake Ontario to Lake America, there are a few outstanding treaties you may want to consult. Start with the Treaty of Niagara, 1764: the Great Lakes covenant between the Crown and Indigenous nations. Then read the Treaty of Canandaigua, 1794: the United States’ promise of perpetual peace, friendship and respect for Haudenosaunee sovereignty. Finally, have someone bring you the Boundary Waters Treaty, 1909: the agreement under which Canada and the United States govern the waters they share. Notice the recurring word, Donald: SHARE. Lake Ontario existed before Canada. It existed before the United States. Its Indigenous name existed before either country drew a border through the water and began arguing about which side owned the reflection. You may direct American federal agencies to type Lake America into an American database. That changes the label on your map. It does not change the lake, Canada’s maps, the international boundary, Indigenous history or the covenants beneath the water. That requires consent. Treaties are not suggestions left behind by previous administrations. They are continuing promises between peoples. A president inherits those obligations along with the office, whether or not they fit beneath his signature. So, as your friend and closest neighbour, let me offer some free Canadian advice: Put down the Sharpie. Step away from the map. Have a glass of water.
