The name Ontario originates from the Iroquoian language family—specifically the Wyandot word Ontarí'io, meaning "great lake" or "lake of shining waters"—and was used by First Nations peoples long before early French explorers adopted it into European maps in the 1600s. The lake came first, lending its name to the Canadian province of Ontario when it was established in 1867 rather than the other way around.
