@nathanwillardfilms: Sleeping Beauty might be one of Disney's most misunderstood movies. The strange thing is that even Disney's own marketing has spent decades encouraging us to think of this primarily as Aurora's story: a beautiful princess falls under a curse and waits for a handsome prince to rescue her. But that's not really the story the movie tells. And looking at the film differently doesn't mean pretending its world isn't patriarchal. That’s the world in which this fairy tale takes place. What's interesting is what the filmmakers chose to do within those constraints. The real heroes are women. The central struggle is between women. The male hero is brave and important, but he succeeds because women rescue him, equip him, protect him, and ultimately they make his victory possible. This doesn’t make Sleeping Beauty a perfect movie. I don't think it's even close to one of Disney's greatest movies. But I do think there's something sad about a movie that gave its female characters this much agency in 1959, becoming infamous for exactly the opposite reason, because we've spent so much time looking at the sleeping princess that we failed to notice who was actually saving her. Maybe Sleeping Beauty doesn't need to be rescued from its critics. #SleepingBeauty #DisneyPrincess #Feminism #FairyTales #DisneyTok #FilmTok #FilmAnalysis Maybe it just needs to be watched from a different perspective.
but you have to define what you mean by feminist. it really isn't a feminist film if you dig deeper. maleficent does not adhere to the patriarchy, she is punished (by losing her life) for being an empowered woman. the other three women with power are desexualized (spinsters), in service of and protecting what the patriarchy prizes, a young docile female (aurora). the princess deserves true love because she is obedient to the patriarchy. in the end, everything returns to the status quo.

Sleeping beauty is a female centered movie. Maleficent, on the other hand, is undoubtedly a feminist movie. It’s actually very interesting that this specific story has these two retellings. Perfect example of how slightly changing the framing can completely change the context and implications of piece of media.

Having female protagonists does not make it a feminist film

Also the protagonist are older women with natural body types which is something they later flip in movies.

Also, if you think feminism excludes men exhibiting any sort of power or women exhibiting any need for help, then you’re not a real feminist. Feminism is about equality, not about any gender’s dominance, and we all have our individual high and low points.

I think a true feminist movie would be more about a woman’s empowerment and not just being the main character. The fairies literally say that they cannot defeat maleficent because it’s against the rules of fairies. So they couldn’t even defeat maleficent without the prince. Aurora couldn’t be woken up without the prince. None of this would even be possible without the prince. It is definitely not a feminist movie. It’s not a bad movie, but it does not have feminist representation. I’d also like to mention that the fairies were horrible caretakers. Even after 18 years, they didn’t know how to do shit. I know it was probably for comedy relief, but that just also belittle the feminist quality in them too. They 100% couldn’t do anything without the prince. Also, if they would’ve just listened to Aurora and let her meet the guy she wanted none of this would’ve happened in the first place. So they also don’t listen to other women. 😂

Also worth noting they go from saying they can’t cast a spell that would hurt maleficent because they only use their powers for “good” to enchanting Philip’s sword so it will kill her. They go from an innocent to a more mature understanding of the meaning of good and evil and the role of violence in fighting oppression. This is by far the most developed character arc in the movie. Also, the movie’s comical depiction of the two kings buffoonishly arranging their children’s marriage—only for Philip to thumb his nose at it—was pretty progressive commentary on patriarchy and changing views on women’s agency in relationships. Or something.

It pisses me off when people say the fairies are just side characters 😭 like Aurora genuinely doesn’t even know who tf Maleficent is

same with when Aurora cried when the fairies said "you cant be with the man you just met"
SOO many people interpret her being a crybaby that she cant be with philip, but oml yall 😭 shes crying because of ALL that's been revealed to her out of the blue 💀 shes overwhelmed, she was well adjusted to her peasant life, she loved the forest, but was just informed that she is actually the princess of the castle she always stared at every day, shes learned she has been promised to someone by birth, shes learned her aunties are not actually her family. EVERYTHING shes been told about her was revealing that her entire life since birth was a lie, she has to leave it all behind! of course thats all overwhelming to hear

Sleeping beauty has always been my favorite Disney princess movie. The music, the animation, the entire artistic lens is so gothic, dreamy and surreal, overall it’s a beautiful film. It was sad to see when others would dismiss it as problematic and antifeminist so I love this perspective and you’re absolutely right. It centers women in a way that’s never truly been acknowledged

Old fairy tales having male characters written to support the women characters is really interesting bc writers tend to do the opposite nowadays
