@profahmedhankir: “You Have a Mental Health Condition. You Shouldn’t Have Children.” “That’s what I once heard someone say. And as someone living with a mental health condition — and as a father — I’ve never forgotten it.” Genes are not destiny. Living with a mental health condition does not make you incapable of being a loving, nurturing parent. I cannot protect my daughter from everything life may bring. But I can promise her this: if darkness ever enters her life, she will never have to face it alone. I love you, my princess. With all of my heart. ❤️
A lot of mental health issues are actually because of the environment and the people that you’ve been exposed to throughout your life.

There’s a difference between having a mental health issue and it being under control and having mental health issues that are not diagnosed and/or controlled. I would say the majority of people today have some sort of mental health issue at some point in their life or another. Most of them are just not willing to admit it or get help. There’s nothing wrong with having some mental health issues and bearing children as long as it doesn’t interfere with your ability to parent and look out for your child’s best interests. But at some point in their lives they’re going to have issues whether you believe so or not and at least being a person who has suffered you will understand and know how to guide them versus being someone who is ignorant to mental health issues or doesn’t know when or how to seek help.
My dad had severe treatment resistant depression, and combat PTSD. He later went on to develop psychotic depression in my teenage years. He was the most empathetic and understanding and loving father ever. My dad originally didn’t want children because the depression told him he would be a bad father, but I came along by accident and he said it was the best thing that ever happened to him. He was very open about his mental health from a very young age, he took accountability for anything that went wrong due to it. If he couldn’t go out one day because he had a flashback, he told me why and said he would stay behind and me and my mum go, but I always wanted to stay with him when he was feeling ill. He told me about the risks of my genetic predisposition, and that cann*bis can trigger psychosis. He said he would never tell me what to do, but wanted me to have all the facts to make a decision for myself. Due to that I never touched smoking or dr*gs. He always felt like home and my safety and my hero. Sadly he died 2 years ago, and I will love and miss him for the rest of my life 💔 I’m sure you are doing such a wonderful job with your daughter.

I have a mental health condition, I would never have kids. Not unless I learnt how to control bpd and autism, I just wouldn’t have the capacity to look after a mini-me. That’s my decision of course it isn’t the same for anyone else 🤷♂️kids deserve loving parents, I couldn’t be that.

I agree. I can barely keep myself alive, the child would be neglected 100%

I have bipolar, ADHD and experienced psychosis 3 times. Everyone who meets my children always complement how amazing they are. I always get told that I am the best mother to my children. Motherhood keeps me going, they are the reason I priorities my health. Because of my children, I make sure I eat good, take my medication, exercise and prioritise my sleep. I love being a mother and this is the best I’ve felt about myself aswell. Don’t let the label stop you from living your best life 🥰

My kids are the ultimate stabilizer of my mental health. I don’t use them to help me mentally: their mere existence means life is actually worth living, they are my reason to be happy, to face anything that comes my way, & they love & need me ❤️

If you are high functioning enough to have a full time job, then you are also high functioning enough to have children. As long as your not abusive, which most people with mental health problems are not, then you can have children and youll teach them to be good people with good values who respect and treats everyone equally. Youll be able to teach them things that people who havn't struggeled can't.
