Imagine announcing: “I’m going to Lake America next week! I can’t wait to see everyone’s reaction when I call it that!” 🤣 Ma’am. The reaction may not be what you think it is. Because apparently people on the American side of Lake Ontario aren’t necessarily interested in participating in the rebrand either. A Rochester-area screen printer told The Washington Post that a couple hundred people expressed interest in an event where they could print Lake Ontario designs onto their shirts. Meanwhile, Ontario Premier Doug Ford unveiled a giant sign declaring: “LAKE ONTARIO. NOW AND ALWAYS.” And here’s the part that makes this whole thing spectacularly stupid: Trump’s executive order can dictate what U.S. federal agencies call the lake. It cannot make Canada adopt the name, erase centuries of history, or magically convince everyone living around Lake Ontario to start calling it something else. In fact, as of today, Google Maps is displaying “Lake America” to U.S. users while Canadian users still see “Lake Ontario.” So we’ve apparently reached the stage of international relations where the same body of water changes its name depending on which side of the border your phone is standing on. 😂 And now the merch resistance has begun. Honestly, that’s the most American response imaginable: Government: “We renamed the lake.” Americans: “Cool. We made T-shirts saying you didn’t.” 🇺🇸🤝🇨🇦 Some things don’t need a 40-page policy paper. It’s Lake Ontario. #LakeOntario #LakeAmerica #Canada #Trump #PoliticalSatire
