@inventionontt: Original Video Credit: IG/norgvarg_ Along the exposed metalwork of an offshore vessel, a deckhand is removing layers of corrosion and deteriorated coating with a pneumatic needle scaler. The tool reaches irregular edges and joints where rust can become especially difficult to remove. Compressed air drives a bundle of hardened steel needles rapidly back and forth against the surface. Thousands of repeated impacts fracture and dislodge brittle rust, scale, and loose paint while allowing the individual needles to conform to uneven shapes. Saltwater and marine air continuously promote corrosion on exposed steel, making surface preparation an important part of vessel maintenance. Needle scaling removes compromised material so suitable surfaces can be prepared for new protective coatings, helping slow further corrosion and extend the service life of marine equipment.
