Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (1881–1938) was the soldier who saved a nation from collapse and the statesman who rebuilt it from the ground up. During the First World War, he became a hero at Gallipoli, where Ottoman forces stopped the Allied landing at the Dardanelles and turned him into one of the most respected commanders of the empire. But his real legend began after the war. With the Ottoman Empire defeated, occupied and carved up by the Allies, Mustafa Kemal refused the humiliation of the Treaty of Sèvres. From Anatolia, he led the Turkish War of Independence against foreign occupation, Greek advances, Armenian forces and the dying authority of the sultan. Against impossible odds, he turned a defeated empire into a victorious republic. In 1923, he founded the Republic of Turkey and launched one of the most radical reform programs of the modern age. Kemalism was built on republicanism, nationalism, secularism, statism, reformism and populism. Atatürk abolished the sultanate and the caliphate, separated religion from the state, replaced the Arabic script with the Latin alphabet, expanded education, modernized law, and gave women new civil and political rights, including the vote before many European countries. Nearly a century later, Atatürk is still everywhere in Turkey, but his legacy remains contested. His vision of a secular, sovereign and modern republic faces the return of political Islam, and Turkey still lives with the question his revolution tried to answer: should the nation look westward, toward Europe and secular modernity, or eastward, toward religion, empire and the Ottoman past. #ataturk #kemalizm #mustafakemal #turkiye #turkishhistory
