Can’t talk about the reasons for this without talking about white supremacy and environmental racism. Cleaning up the river wasn’t a priority because the people who would enjoy the fruit of those labors have skin with too much melanin.

I’ve been swimming and fishing the Potomac River my whole life. The issue is building a city around the Potomac. The storm water run off and sewage drainage going into the river is the issue. Go up the Potomac where there isn’t a city around it and it’s generally safe. Even the recent data on go Potomac in and around DC, per EPA standards you can swim in the water, I just wouldn’t after a rainfall

1000%! But also people really are doing something about it. They built a massive tunnel to help capture waste water and the water quality is improving dramatically. Search for DC‘s clean river project. Of course we still need to do better

I used to live in dc. I am an avid swimmer. Not once did I ever want to swim in the Potomac. Most days it reeks. All I can think of is the constant dumping that happened ages ago and the bacteria from water runoff. I don’t think any of that will be rectified in my life time but DC or the Feds should start somewhere.

It’s because they built the storm drains and sewer lines as the same pipes when they built them long long ago. They’re trying to separate the sewer and storm drains but it takes time and, crucially, money.

Tons of us in Alexandria swam in the Potomac in highschool. Probably would still be swimming in it if it weren’t for DC pumping their shit into it for the entire winter this year
