Monster House is one of the most unique animated films of the 2000s. Directed by Gil Kenan and executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, the 2006 film follows three kids who discover that the creepy house across the street is literally alive—and hungry. What starts as a Halloween adventure slowly turns into a surprisingly emotional horror story. What makes Monster House stand out is how it treats children like actual children. DJ, Chowder, and Jenny feel real, and the film isn’t afraid to be genuinely scary. The house isn’t just a haunted location; it’s the film’s main monster, with windows as eyes, a door as a mouth, and an entire personality of its own. Visually, it was also ahead of its time. The movie used performance-capture technology similar to The Polar Express, but with more stylized character designs. It became one of the earliest mainstream animated films to successfully blend motion-capture performances with CGI animation. For a lot of people who grew up in the 2000s, Monster House was their first taste of horror. It’s spooky enough to unsettle kids, funny enough to entertain families, and emotionally rich enough to revisit as an adult. No wonder it earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature and has developed a cult following over the years.
