@gts_phil: What actually happened in Nepal? High in the Himalayas, a huge section of ice and rock became unstable on the side of Langtang Lirung mountain. On August 26, a massive section of the glacier and the mountain beneath it collapsed. The falling ice and rock crashed down into the valley with enormous force, creating an avalanche of ice, rock and debris. It then slammed into the river system below, causing the water level to rise dramatically and sending a devastating flash flood downstream. So, this wasn’t a volcanic eruption — it was a chain reaction: mountain instability, glacier collapse, massive debris flow, and then a sudden flash flood. Scientists say unusually warm conditions and the long-term warming of the Himalayas may be contributing to the instability of glaciers and mountain slopes, although the exact cause of this particular collapse is still being investigated. And that’s what makes this disaster so frightening: it happened extremely quickly, with little warning, turning a collapse high in the mountains into a disaster far downstream.
