I don't have kids, but now my brain is going "... PERFECT time to teach them about responsible and ethical pet ownership!" You can make them search the web for the manual instead of handing it to them, get other marbles to pretend to choose the correct food, etc. HOWEVER - tamagotchis are better, since the tamas will get sick and maybe even die when neglected, or just end up dying from old age. I think that's important for kids... so long as the adult explains it. My parents didn't, so it never clicked with me that I was the cause or that they just got old. Had to learn that lesson with real animals they'd got us, and I feel horrible to this day...
