im going to be honest, this was really distrubing to talk about. • • A man named Yordanis Martinez comes to Dallas from Cuba, but he doesn’t show up for a fresh start. He’s already got a long violent record—child abuse, assaults, theft. ICE even tried to send him back, but Cuba wouldn’t take him. So he stayed free. He finds work at a small motel run by Chandra, an Indian immigrant who just wanted to help someone rebuild. On September 10, Chandra tells his workers not to use a broken washing machine and has another employee translate for Yordanis. Somehow that tiny moment sets Yordanis off. He grabs a large machete and chases Chandra through the motel. Chandra runs, screaming for help, but Yordanis catches him in the parking lot. Chandra’s wife and 18-year-old son rush in, begging him to stop. He pushes them aside and attacks. In seconds, he takes Chandra’s life and even kicks and hides the victim’s head while the family watches in shock. Paramedics arrive to a scene straight out of a nightmare. Police finally arrest Yordanis, machete still in hand. And the question everyone is asking now is simple.
