I feel bad for Joe Goldberg because, even though I know he does terrible and unforgivable things, I can’t help but see the damaged and lonely person underneath everything he does. Joe clearly has a lot of trauma from his childhood, and it seems like he never really learned what healthy love, trust, or relationships are supposed to look like. He desperately wants to be loved and understood, but the way he tries to find that love is extremely unhealthy and destructive. What makes me feel especially bad for him is that Joe genuinely seems to believe that he is doing things for the people he loves and that he is protecting them, even when his actions are actually hurting them. He creates this idea in his head that if he just finds the right person, everything inside of him will finally feel okay, but every relationship ends up bringing out the worst parts of him. I also think Joe is a tragic character because he has moments where he seems capable of recognizing that something is wrong with him and that he wants to be better, but he repeatedly falls back into the same patterns. There are glimpses of the person he could have been if he had received the right
