I’ve traveled around the world, and one thing keeps sitting heavy on my heart. The more places I visited, the more people I met, the more I started to notice something I never expected. I often felt more supported, more loved, and more genuinely welcomed by strangers in foreign lands than by my own African brothers and sisters. And when I say genuinely, I mean it. The kind of kindness that asks for nothing in return. The kind that comes without hidden motives, without competition, without trying to measure your worth first. Just pure human warmth. That realization hurt me deeply. Because home is supposed to feel different. Your own people are supposed to understand you without explanation. They’re supposed to celebrate your growth, protect your dreams, and embrace you with pride. But too often, I found more encouragement from people who owed me nothing than from people who shared my roots, my culture, and my struggle. It’s a painful truth to admit. Not because I hate where I come from, but because I love it so much. I know how beautiful, powerful, and resilient African people are. I know the strength we carry. Which is why it hurts when we tear each other down, compete instead of collaborate, or withhold support from one another. Traveling showed me that love and community are possible everywhere. But it also made me question why we sometimes struggle to give that same grace to our own people. Maybe healing starts with honesty. Maybe growth begins when we stop pretending these things don’t exist and start choosing to do better for one another.
