A little Parkinson’s awareness and a few things I’ve learned from helping take care of my grandpa. ❤️ 1. REMEMBER WHO WAS THERE FOR YOU. Taking care of someone with Parkinson’s isn’t easy. Watching someone who was once so independent struggle with everyday things is hard. But my grandpa was always there to pick me up when I needed him. Now it’s my turn to be there for him. Never forget the people who were there for you. 2. HAVE A GOOD SUPPORT SYSTEM. My mom busts her ass every single day working as an RN and she’s the one mostly taking care of my grandparents. My family gives me a lot of grace with how much I train and the fact that I work full-time an hour away. On weekends, the first two hours of my day are usually spent helping my grandpa. I’m grateful because none of us could do this alone. 3. CHOOSE A PARTNER WHO SHOWS UP DURING THE HARD TIMES. When you’re choosing someone to build a life with, think beyond the dates, vacations, and good memories. Will they support you when your family needs you? Will they care about the people you love? Will they stand beside you when life gets difficult? Because those moments are just as much a part of a relationship as the good ones. 4. YOU’RE GOING TO GET FRUSTRATED. And that’s something I don’t think people talk about enough. There are difficult days. Sometimes you get tired, overwhelmed, or frustrated. We’re human. But I try to remind myself that he isn’t choosing to struggle with these things either. A little patience and understanding can go a long way. And one day, I’d give anything to have these moments back. 5. CHERISH THE TIME YOU STILL HAVE. Even when it’s difficult. Even when you’re tired. Even when you’d rather be doing something else. I know I won’t have my grandpa forever, and that’s something I think about a lot more as I get older. So I’ll keep showing up, helping where I can, and appreciating the time we still get together. Love you, old man. ❤️ And to anyone else helping care for a loved one with Parkinson’s or any other condition, I have a lot of respect for you. It’s not easy, and I hope you have people looking out for you, too. #fyp #parkinsons #parkinsonsawareness #family
