Mom :
My husband once asked me, during a particularly suffocating season of life, “What can we do to get you more Me time?”, and the only answer I could give was, “By punishing future me.” In our particular case, I was a full-time stay at home mom to a whirlwind of a child (a delightful one, but not an easy one), and he was working absolutely insane hours - 60-70 hours a week. He was an engaged and loving dad during the hours he was home, and would often take her out to do something on weekends so I could try to dig out from the pit, but the domestic duties were quite literally impossible for me to keep up with, and if I didn’t do them, they simply didn’t get done. We basically just lived in a state of semi-squalor until she started school and I had a few child-free hours a week, but I remember him asking me that very genuinely, and thinking it was just not fair to expect him to get home after working a 14 hour day and clean the house. If we’d had enough money to outsource some cleaning it would have helped, but there was no budget for that. Now, years later, all I can think about are the women who are doing EVERYTHING - working full-time, doing all the cooking, all the cleaning, all the childcare, while their lout-of-a-husband plays video games, or hangs out with his buddies, and thinking how GOOD I had it, in the season I WAS DROWNING. If I had it good WHILE I WAS DROWNING, how on earth are women surviving when their husbands AREN’T supportive and loving and participating?!?
