@flood_freak: Making progress on mapping the glacier collapse and #flood in #nepal. Using multispectral imagery is important in situations like these because it is the fastest way to detect new glacial outwash lakes, which are a threat to #recovery and are reportedly beginning to form as a result of the sediment deposited by the collapse. I should have a finished flood #map soon and will share it (and any updates) when I can. @The New York Times
1 cubic kilometer of ice falling 7000ft releases 19.2 petajoules or 5.3TWh… that’s the equivalent of 300 times the energy that was released by the Hiroshima bomb for perspective…

I saw a random video with like 10 views that it was a bedrock fracture. Take it with a grain of salt but after this I’m starting to wonder. Good work

Seeing it with the slider like this really puts it into scale how massive the destruction was… poor Nepal

Makes me wonder…the standard language used to describe this has always been “glaciers melting.” Giving the interpretation of a gentle warming, like snow turning to water. Now that we’ve witnessed this, maybe people will finally get it. It will be a violent, massive and unfathomable collapse wiping out everything in its path. How many more shelves will collapse ? Nepal is “the roof” of the world & we all live under it

It’s not only the sheer size of the destruction path but how fast it happened. It traveled 13 miles in 7 mins. Thats like going 120 down the highway.

the border crossing video was sooo far away from the starting point. watching the video I could have sworn it was right there with all the force that destroyed that place

wow.. seeing the topography like this is absolutely crazy.
what a horrific event.
iirc, that happened the same day that a tornado destroyed an entire village in southern France, which is absolutely unheard of in that region.
climate change is getting really loud lately

Have you made a video about the new lake formed where millions of litres are pooling and they fear it will give way there?

so global warming caused the glacier to melt and break off thus creating this disaster?

makes you think how many civilizations have been wiped out throughout the thousands and thousands of years due to flash flooding. Just the way this range is carved, you can tell it probably happened long ago way before humans can document. the whole border crossing building is gone with no trace of it. 😳 what other ancient civilizations have been wiped out that we have no trace of. so wierd to think about.

We need independent researchers to go up there where the glacier used to be and look for evidence of explosions
