Five paralegals, including two UP Diliman students, were arrested by the Fort Bonifacio Police Substation 1 on Thursday morning while protesting against the Pax Silica initiative at the Investors Forum of the Luzon Economic Forum at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in BGC. Kenneth Castor, chief of staff of the UP Office of the Student Regent (OSR), was arrested during the police dispersal and taken to the Tuktukan Police Station, along with paralegals Jona Yang and Mara Peralta.
Five paralegals, including two UP Diliman students, were arrested by the Fort Bonifacio Police Substation 1 on Thursday morning while protesting against the Pax Silica initiative at the Investors Forum of the Luzon Economic Forum at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in BGC. Kenneth Castor, chief of staff of the UP Office of the Student Regent (OSR), was arrested during the police dispersal and taken to the Tuktukan Police Station, along with paralegals Jona Yang and Mara Peralta. "[S]a buong sistema ng UP, mga organisasyon, student councils, at mga Iskolar ng Bayan[,] kundenahin ang iligal na pag-aresto at ipanawagan ang agarang pagpapalaya kay Kenneth Castor," UP OSR said in a Facebook post. UP Diliman student RC Placido, meanwhile, was arrested at the station while assisting those apprehended. Paralegal Daya Juliano was also arrested. Rights group KARAPATAN condemns the "arbitrary arrests as a clear violation of the people's right to peaceful protest," while appealing for urgent media coverage. "The illegal arrests [...] demonstrate the continuing use of state forces to suppress those who stand against imperialist development aggression projects," UP Solidaridad said in a statement. The systemwide alliance likewise calls on its member publications and writers' organizations to demand their immediate release and expose attacks against individuals who exercise their democratic rights. The Pax Silica initiative aims to build a manufacturing hub on a 1,620-hectare land in New Clark City, Tarlac, as an artificial intelligence and semiconductor ecosystem. UP Solidaridad described the initiative as an "imperialist development aggression project that places foreign interests above the welfare and rights of the Filipino people." #UJPTambuli
