Why does salt dissolve in water??? The ability of salt to dissolve in water comes down to the interactions between the molecules of salt (sodium chloride, NaCl) and water (H₂O). Here's a breakdown: Polarity of Water: Water molecules are polar, meaning they have a positive end (the hydrogen atoms) and a negative end (the oxygen atom). This uneven distribution of charge is crucial and is a result of the highly electronegative oxygen atom. Ionic Bonds in Salt: Salt is an ionic compound, made up of positively charged sodium ions (Na⁺) and negatively charged chloride ions (Cl⁻) held together by strong ionic bonds or electrostatic forces. The Dissolving Process: When salt is added to water, the water molecules surround the salt crystals. The positive end of water molecules is attracted to the negative chloride ions, and the negative end of water molecules is attracted to the positive sodium ions. These attractions are strong enough to overcome the ionic bonds holding the salt crystal together. The water molecules pull the sodium and chloride ions apart, and each ion becomes surrounded by water molecules. This process is called dissociation. As a result, the salt ions disperse throughout the water, creating a solution. In essence, the "tug-of-war" between the water molecules and the salt ions is won by the water molecules, leading to the salt dissolving. #stem #scienceiscool #scienceismagic #water #molecules #chem #bio #apchem #apbio #chemistry #tutor #sciencetutor #greenscreenvideo
