@forgotten.black.places: In 1935, A.L. Lewis—Florida’s first Black millionaire—purchased beachfront property on Amelia Island and created American Beach. During segregation, it gave Black families a place to vacation, own property and enjoy the ocean without humiliation. Hotels, nightclubs and vacation homes soon lined the beach, attracting thousands of Black travelers. Had you ever heard of American Beach? #AmericanBeach #AmeliaIsland #FloridaBlackHistory #BlackHistory #ForgottenBlackPlaces
I currently live at American Beach and it’s an honor for me and it’s an honor to my ancestors to still have a home here to allow my son to swim in the same waters that was built by God and land secured by AL Lewis. It’s an absolute jewel.

The blacks brought a lot of stuff in Florida that we dont know about. Someone needs to make a book about all of the history that they are trying to keep hidden
