@armedforcesfacts: Every US military aircraft name tells you exactly what it does. F: Fighter. Primary mission — destroy other aircraft. The F-15 has a 104-0 air-to-air record. The F-35 wasn't the 35th fighter ever built — it was the 35th designation in the sequence since 1962. B: Bomber. The B-52 first flew in 1952 and is still operational in 2026. The airframe is older than the internet. Older than most pilots' parents. A: Attack. The A-10 Warthog was literally built around its 30mm cannon — which fires 3,900 rounds per minute and destroys tanks. C: Cargo. The C-130 Hercules has been in service for 70 years across 50+ nations. E: Electronic warfare. The E-3 Sentry sees every aircraft within 400km while remaining invisible. And the F-117 Nighthawk: an attack aircraft deliberately given a fighter designation. To confuse Soviet intelligence. They assumed it was a fighter. It dropped bombs. Never shot down another aircraft. The naming: a lie. The lie: worked for 7 years. #military #aviation #f35 #b52 #a10
You missed a few, X/Y mean prototype/experimental (X-32 and YF-23) the Y always has something after so like “YF” is prototype fighter, and “YB” is prototype bomber. SR is strategic reconnaissance, CL mean California Lockheed (skunk works) U mean utility, they are a few more but those are the rest you will see probably

On rotary wing aircraft you have an e stand for echo. Means they can be refueled in the air and do not need to land. It is a forwarded pertruding nozzle.

The C-130 is for Cargo but the AC-130 is for attacking. Same plane different characteristics.

i wld rather confuse the opposition by using a Fighter with a B classification... imo, Bombers dont hv much defense hence relies on Fighters and by using a Bomber with an F classification it just makes it more prone to get shot down by Fighters

In the F series numbers are successive. The numbers not used in operational planes are most likely skipped because they only existed as concept.
19 was skipped to prevent mix up with the Mig-19
