Timeouts: the setting that stops one slow service from freezing your entire app. Without a timeout, a request to a slow or dead service waits forever. The connection stays open, your connection pool fills up, and new requests pile on until the whole caller hangs. No timeout means infinite timeout. With a timeout, the caller sets a deadline (say 2000ms). If the service doesn't answer in time, the request is cancelled, the connection is freed, and you return a fast error or fallback.
