Best advice I ever got that I give every chance I can: “Anything you want to do in the first six years, you HAVE to do in the first six months.” Loud restaurants, guests for dinner, music, books, parents get naps, even concerts and vacations.

The one about 'getting to like her slowly' is such an underrated comment. This should be something every mother-to-be should know. The terrible guilt that so many moms have around feeling either nothing or even feeling sad/resentful is 100% normal. It doesn't mean the whole thing is a failure. It's a love that grows through time.

I saw a great idea from a night nanny who laid a heating pad on the crib mattress for just a short period while she soothed the baby to sleep and then right when she went to lay the baby back down she removed the heating pad. It seemed to help that the mattress wasn’t cold and jolted the baby awake. I thought it would be a great idea to try when nothing else was working.

Can i add one as a 21 years experience maternity support worker all the books saying that breastfeeding comes naturally is bs gaslighting. It takes a good 6/8weeks to establish it there’s cluster feeds hormone drops sleeping changes learning to latch / how quickly milk comes in / sleep deprivation/ effects of stress or meds / just like labour is called it because it’s hard work the same goes for breastfeeding. Those that take to it like water off a ducks back are a rarity. So please lovely beautiful mamas ask for help / don’t doubt yourselves & keep going xxxx

When I had my daughter I remember being alone with her in the car for the first time on the way home from hospital and wondering why I didn’t feel madly in love with her. I thought something was wrong with me. But sure enough, over time she became the best thing ever.

I feel all these blackout tents and white noise machines are just training babies to have sleep problems in the future. If not optimal, perfect location, they won't be able to sleep!

Nice advice but thought 3 am ‘habit’ feed a bit weird? Babies just need a feed when they need a feed, there isn’t a habit

No one tells you the "you get to like her slowly" part, and it's honestly such a mindf**k. I could not figure out why I wasn't having the same experience other women were having, I felt so much shame.

I feel like every new mum, or mum again, should be visited by either a volunteer mum, or a professional before leaving the hospital to be filled in on all the information alot of health professionals leave out. So many things I had to discover on my own the hard way, or had people telling me after id already lost my marbles over them and finally cracked. would've been so helpful to have a mum come and visit me and tell me their own experiences that could've helped me

That’s one thing I regretted, making the house quiet. It only made things hard for me

I'm pretty sure my mother doing housework while I was a baby is why I love hearing the sound of a vacuum running somewhere in the house 😅

“Eat before you feed her” I am always the last to eat. I cook for everyone then I’m putting babies down for naps or bedtime or waking up to get them to nursery. 🥺

As others have pointed out, we need to talk more about the „getting to love them slowly“. There is absolutely no harm in not having a deep and intense connection with your child from day 1. Yet mothers feel like something is wrong with them if they aren’t instantly obsessed with a person they don’t know yet ♥️

when I was born i absolutely did not settle. still in the hospital, the nurses took me to their busy station. mum and I both got some much needed rest and she learned to always make noise while I slept. to this day I can still sleep anywhere

You get to like her slowly 🩷🌺💕---- I was set at one baby, and our second/last one was a surprise...I was afraid that I wouldn't love her like I love our first born,...I was not the same pregnant mom with her...but later on, I realized we get to love them equally but differently.

The last one is so real. I didn’t have PPD but with my first I didn’t feel the immediate overwhelming love. I was like, “Well hello, who are you?” We got to know each other and I remember the first moment I felt that true love. It was about 2 weeks in and it was so special ❤️

Some of this is good advice, but respectfully - 8 week old babies are likely to go though a whole heap of changes, and every kid is different. Some kids sleep easier than others.

I agree with all except restricting feeds. All my babies were demand fed. Also I would never eat while my baby was crying hungry, gives you indigestion!

my daughter is 6, so these newborn struggles are long gone but I'd honestly say she was about 2 before I truly fell in love with her, I mean, the newborn stage was hard, harder than I'd imagined it could ever be, sleep deprivation, nappy explosions, teething and weaning, it was all just work.... i loved her, but something was missing, then one day, something just clicked and everything fell into place. its still hard, being the best parebt you can is effort every single day. as a baby she was precious, but as a child is the best thing that ever happened to me x
