@barclaymountaincompany: Before Allegany State Park became a nearly 65,000-acre destination, it began with approximately 7,100 acres and an effort to preserve part of Western New York’s landscape. One of the people who helped turn that vision into reality was State Senator DeHart H. Ames. Born in Great Valley, Ames sponsored the 1921 legislation that helped establish what would eventually become New York’s largest state park. It’s another example of a small Western New York community having a much larger impact than most people realize. #GreatValleyNY #AlleganyStatePark #CattaraugusCounty #WesternNewYork #NewYorkHistory
I recognize that approach into Great Valley, and up 219N into Ellicottville

also worth noting that the state forcibly took land from local natives for the park if they didn’t agree to leave, and it’s also the former site of a quaker indian residential school. there is a lot of interesting history surrounding the park and much of it never gets mentioned.
