My daughter is only 3 days into school and has already brought home so many worksheets. The only reason she can do them is because she did Kumon all summer to get ahead. She would not have been able to do this based on what she learned in kindergarten and taking the summer off.

I'm not understanding. are we not teaching our kids at home as well? because that is part of our jobs as parents. it's not all on the teachers.

I just withdrew my 5 year old son from public school to homeschool. I sent him bc he has an IEP & was getting speech and OT. He was coming home everyday saying he was a “bad” kid. He kept coming home with an orange card bc he wasn’t “following the rules”. He has an IEP in place due to his diagnosis, he does not always understand what is being said. Since I’ve brought him out, he is a different kid. Within two weeks, my little 5 yo was losing the light in his eyes. Now that we’re homeschooling, and doing LOTS of PLAY, the light is back!

Maybe this is the wrong place to vent, but last week, my 1st grader’s teacher put packing tape over his and his buddy’s mouths because they were talking during silent reading. Silent reading time in first grade? Some of them can barely read at all. My son can, but if he helps someone else or gets bored and talks, the punishment is PACKING TAPE? It’s being investigated, but I’m still furious and waiting for results is hard.

Sometimes when I’m explaining our kindergarten homeschool plan I feel judged that is it’s intense like public school but likeeee that’s WHY. I want kinder to be KINDER not whatever this is

My best friend had a meeting with her daughter’s teacher this week, very beginning of first grade, teacher said she’s “behind”. This summer at home she was reading chapter books.

When I was in kindergarten it was only half day and we took naps😂 they’re expecting way too much from these kids.

I noticed this when my 8yr old was entering vpk. Vpk is the new kindergarten. The school system needs to reel it back in. Children have not changed and magically become more advanced, if anything with technology, I would say it’s opposite. It’s my opinion that the people in charge of creating the standards are far out of touch with child milestones and development and it’s actually creating kids who lack competency of very important skills.

I left teaching kindergarten 9 years ago to be a SAHM. My oldest started kindergarten 6 years after I left the drastic difference in that 6 years. I was devastated.

I’ve really struggled to keep my now 9 year old in California up with what they require in public school. Unfortunately we have to send her back because she’s an only child and gotten depressed not having peer to peer interaction. There’s just not enough of a consistent homeschooling group that available on a daily basis for her. So she will forever not be on track

California is a joke. I taught for 34 years in public school. My last year I had 10 kids out of 20 who scored a 1 on 3rd grade SBAC Reading! i taught 4th, so that was my starting point! Pushing higher level curriculum is obviously not the answer.

I’d genuinely love to hear someone justify that kindergarteners are already standardized testing, 2 weeks in they are already doing a state test on a Chromebook…

As a kindergarten teacher expectations are to high. In Texas students can only go to Prek if they pay or low income. Some kids in kindergarten doesn’t even know how to hold a pencil. My district started on 8/12 and they are already starting district testing. My district has a strict schedule that doesn’t even give wiggle room for kindergartners to have any funny.

These are the things that we noticed when my oldest was in kindergarten, first grade and then shoved into second grade when she still couldn’t read or write at grade level. We started homeschooling after she was pushed forward into third grade but still couldn’t read in grade level. I spent the next year teaching her how to read and write. I’m so thankful that we had the opportunity to teach her at her own pace and make sure she had a good foundation before moving on.

You go through a 4 year ECE program to graduate with a BS in ECE, then you get to your first job and they hand you curriculum that you’re supposed to use.

I chose homeschool and even I’m noticing the curriculum is asking a lot, but I feel better about me doing it with my daughter one on one then a stranger who wouldn’t have the patience for her
