Turning an alliance built around collective defense into a test of personal loyalty risks damaging trust between countries that are supposed to stand together when genuine threats emerge. European governments refusing to enter a war does not automatically make them enemies of America. Allies can disagree. Allies can say no. And sometimes saying no to a war is exactly what governments are elected to do. The bigger question is where this leaves the United States on the world stage. When allies begin questioning whether American commitments will remain dependable from one administration to the next, rebuilding that trust can take years.
