JJ the Forager here, those American Beautyberry (Calicarpa americanus) makes for great jam. The berries are edible, but taste like floral soap. The leaves can be utilized for insect control. In fact, southeastern indigenous nations like the Choctaw, Creek, Koasati and Seminole have utilized the Beautyberry for centuries. Farmers would crush the leaves and them in livestock harnesses to keep the flies and mosquitoes down. Callicapenal, Intermedeol and Spathulenol are the active compounds that keep the bugs away. You can blend the leaves up in rubbing alcohol to get a natural bug repellent.

We pronounced it Cho-wen-waw . I absolutely loved staying there in summer, and the winter weekends as a Girl Scout ! The treehouses were the best! The trails , arts, swimming so much fun so many memories! I wish kids got to experience this !!!
