Another fun fact is scientists hypothesize we can coat the outside of spaceships with the mold to convert solar radiation into energy super efficiently! It could mean a new era of space travel with more renewable, usable energy for ships to accelerate much faster than before

Fun Fact: The Elephants Foot is essentially it’s own element known as Corium. Corium is created when reactor meltdowns destroy a bunch of different materials incorporating those materials into the nuclear material. It’s basically an amalgam of a bunch of different materials like concrete and steel as well as nuclear material. Even with a radiation suit, you won’t last more than 5 minutes within the vicinity of it, because you’ll still pick up a large enough dosage of radiation to be fatal.

the fungal kingdom is an unclassifiable mass of organisms too strange and weird for us to put them anywhere else. mold that eats radiation? sure. single organism mushroom that spands hundreds of acres of forest? why not.

Cave Realtor :
I saw a video essay where someone talked about the workers who would REGULARLY GO DOWN THERE and do tests on the corium flows. There is a famous photo of the elephants foot taken at a time after these guys took a sledgehammer to the dang thing. We also know it is deteriorating at an astonishingly fast rate basically crumbling away before our very eyes. And don’t even get me started on the ways they would get around not keeping their radiation badges on them properly just so they could stay down there longer. Absolutely insane work from these madmen 😭

That mold could be the key to humanities future in nuclear cleanup and disposal. It would completely negate the need for overly hostile architecture to prevent future human societies from digging up stored spent nuclear materials.

Simply not true. Several people view it directly with radiation suits.

I wonder if the fungi family just evolved that quickly and it didn't exist before Chernobyl

They're now trying to use that radiation eating mold to coat space crafts to fight interstellar radiation.

I see the mold as the world's way of fixing something right away. yeah it'll take a long time for us, but for the earth it's just gonna be a blip for it in the long run.
