i agree with your conclusion about doomerism, and completely share your optimism about human nature, but On Killing isnt a good source unfortunately bc it relies on anecdotal evidence, taken decades after the fact in some cases. the study by s. l. a. marshall on firing rates in WW2 is highly suspect - some argue it was fabricated entirely. (https://www.newsweek.com/myth-military-history-94505) i haven't seen much critique of the psychology aspects (especially the part about the distance from an enemy - which i think is especially important now that so much of war is done with drones) but its historical details are suspect at best. also Grossman spends his time giving motivational speeches to police departments on how to become a efficient killer and bragged that he had the "best sex" after fatally shooting someone, and that it was a "perk of the job." Actually giving me a little hope, I have felt very dark since all the Epstein stuff came out and I realized it was just what went down during American Slavery, but on a micro scale. It’s a shame the disproportionate effect the 1% of psychopaths have on humanity.

I would so so love to agree with you. But I just can't wrap my head around the idea that a majority of men who are willing to commit, condone, ignore, or silence rape, and participate in rape culture in even the mundanest aspects of everyday life, are somehow still pretty ok and decent human beings just because they wouldn't want to kill someone. I don't think they are like me at all - in fact I've had to learn when coming of age that they are shockingly and dangerously different from me, and the way I think. It makes it so extremely hard to believe in the good of everyone (or at least the 95%).
